Community Letter on Safety:
Dear Northwestern Community,
At Northwestern Local Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our top priority. In light of recent tragedies in schools across the country and with an increase in threats at nearby schools, we want to take this opportunity to remind you about our commitment to school safety and the measures we have in place.
While we have not experienced any direct threats locally, please be assured that any threat, no matter how credible it may seem, is treated with the utmost seriousness. We work closely with local law enforcement to investigate and respond to any concerns involving the safety of our students and staff.
It is important for all students to understand that making threats against schools is a serious matter. Students who make such threats, whether in person or online, face significant consequences. This includes disciplinary actions according to our school’s Code of Conduct, as well as potential legal, financial, and criminal repercussions.
We encourage you to talk to your children about the seriousness of these situations. Please emphasize that even threats made as a joke can have severe consequences. Additionally, remind them of the importance of reporting any suspicious or threatening behavior to a trusted adult right away.
The Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC), in partnership with the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association and the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, has produced a public service announcement titled Joining Together for School Safety. We encourage you to watch this short video with your child to raise awareness about the importance of school safety.
Finally, we want to remind you about the Safer Ohio School Tip Line (844-723-3764). This anonymous reporting system is available 24/7 to help students, families, and community members report any concerns about safety. You can report concerns by phone, text, the Safer Ohio smartphone app, or via their online form. Crisis response professionals will work to ensure that the appropriate authorities are notified and able to take action.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping Northwestern Local Schools safe. Together, we can ensure a safe environment where students can thrive.
Yours in education,
Jeff Patrick
